The ACLU of SD Announces a Career Opportunity

New York--The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, founded in 1920 and dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution. The ACLU of South Dakota of the National Chapter office in Sioux Falls, SD is seeking applications for the full-time position of Staff Attorney.

OVERVIEW:

The ACLU of South Dakota is a national chapter of the ACLU and conducts state based advocacy through public education, litigation and lobbying. The ACLU of South Dakota is the newest national chapter of the ACLU and it is quickly growing. The South Dakota National Chapter handles issues regarding reproductive freedom, voting rights, the rights of lesbian bisexual and transgender as well as many other civil liberties issues. The South Dakota National Chapter presents a unique opportunity to work in state where the ACLU's presence has not been fully realized. As part of a three person team, the Staff Attorney will be able to make significant contributions in leading the chapter in its civil liberties work.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in and conduct significant impact litigation in federal and state trial and appellate courts, including work on case development, client and witness interviews, discovery, and motions and briefs.
  • Conduct legal research and fact investigation and identify issues subject to legal challenge.
  • Work closely with the Chapter Director and cooperating attorneys at the National ACLU on litigation and advocacy issues.
  • Conduct public education and awareness programs across the state.
  • Collaborate with the Chapter Director on lobbying at the state and local level.
  • Supervise junior staff as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the office staff on administering the legal intake procedure and review all applications for assistance.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

J.D. and a minimum of three years of litigation experience required.
Must be licensed to practice law in the state of South Dakota or sit for & pass the next Bar exam.
Excellent legal research and writing skills.
Capable of performing complex legal analytical work.
Strong public speaking and advocacy skills;
Self-motivated and able to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously.
Ability to develop and implement non-litigation strategies and tactics;
Ability to work cooperatively and collegially on wide-ranging projects with other attorneys, staff, and diverse individuals, organizations, and coalitions in the community;
Ability to travel.

COMPENSATION:

The ACLU offers compensation commensurate with experience and within the parameters of the ACLU compensation scale.
