Asher is proud to live authentically in North Dakota because it’s important to show his community that it’s OK to be yourself and to love and respect the people around you.

Pride is ______. (Fill in the blank)

Pride is living unapologeticly as yourself.

What is your go-to song that gets you ready to take action?

"Blueneck" by Chris Housmen

What do you have to say to politicians who support anti-LGBTQ+ legislation?

Politicians who vote against minorities need to focus their time and energy into more important matter such as climate issues, school shootings, and COVID. Our rights should never be up for debate. LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit people just want to live their lives like everyone else.

How can visibility in local government affect change in North Dakota?

Having visibility in local government can bring unity. In my town, Carrie Evans is our city council vice president. This past year she stood up for the LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit community. She told citizens why it’s important to have the Pride flag flown and why it’s important to bring visibility. As a transgender teen, I felt as though someone that could make difference finally saw me. I felt unified within my community when I saw the pride flag flown outside of my town's city hall. When Carrie spoke, I felt as though I belonged in Minot for the first time in a long time.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would say to my younger self and to other LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit youth the same thing my parents tell me: Live for you not for the people around you.

Join Asher's work to make North Dakota better for everyone my taking the Pride Pledge today!
