The ACLU of North Dakota opposes Senate Bill 2323. Prohibiting abortion clinics from getting a permit for new construction or building an addition if the clinic is within a 30-mile radius of a school is extreme, and, if passed, would likely be found unconstitutional.

The ACLU of North Dakota opposes House Bill 1298, legislation that would ban transgender athletes under the age of 18 from competing on the sports teams that match their gender identity.

Leveling the playing field between women and men should be a priority for North Dakota legislators, but Senate Concurrent Resolution 4010 suggests otherwise.

Our right to protest in the streets is essential, and it shouldn’t depend on the location or other characteristics of the specific road we choose.

This legislation is critical to achieving economic equality and security for hardworking North Dakotans who too often have to choose between the job they need and the family they love.

All students, regardless of their faith, should feel safe and welcome in our public schools. Displaying the Ten Commandments in classrooms and other school spaces would convey the opposite message.

With serious issues like our state’s COVID-19 response and economic recovery, it’s disturbing that legislators are spending so much time attacking vulnerable transgender youth and the LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit community with bills that stoke fear and hatred amid discriminatory rhetoric. 

Real, lasting change is not just granted from our public officials. Change is rooted in our neighborhoods, where the people who bear the burden of oppression and dehumanization nurture the belief that the world could be different and grow those beliefs into movements.

The ACLU of North Dakota’s campaign – amplified through digital and outdoor advertising, direct mail, an expansive email program and social media outreach – is encouraging voters to make a plan to vote, whether that’s absentee by mail or early at their county auditor’s office or in-person on Nov. 3.
